This is a superb survivor from the beginning of the 19th century. This Georgian era, circa 1800 needlework was wrought in silk floss thread upon the most beautiful watermarked laid paper. Can you imagine stitching upon paper!! Such items were nearly always made as devotional items and their popularity began in France from the 1720s until the 1840 period. This small example was unfinished as evident by the blank pricked motifs that never were stitched.
We have a passion for antiques made from paper because paper by its very nature is so very delicate; for such items to survive the centuries makes them even more special.
Our stunning example is a double sided needlework upon paper, the correct term is 'colifichet' or 'small trifle'. Both sides of this singles sheet of paper are exactly the same being free from the usual untidy threads to the reverse...this must have been such exacting work!! We see a flaming sacred heart surrounded by roses and rose buds. The needlework set under old glass, in a gilt slip set within a period veneered frame. We would think it was placed in this frame circa 1840 to 1850.
As there was much debris under the glass we carefully removed the back, cleaned the glass and photographed the needlework on both sides for you. Also photographing it against a light to show the laid paper and watermark.
Size: Frame 7 1/8" by 9 1/8" by 1".
Condition: The frame is beautifully sound. This paper is over 200 years old it is showing its VAST age with a few light creases, an old insect hole, a few light stains and a small tear above the insect hole. The stitching is good and bright to both sides.
This is a little stunner waiting to delight and enthrall...you will love it.
This is part of a collection of miniature French needleworks on paper, each retailed separately...see last image.
