Antique Circa 1820 Miniature Relief Plaque The Death Of Gessler by William Tell
This is a rare little item from the early 19th century. It is most probably Swiss/ Austrian in origin although William Tell mania did spread throughout France and North America!! This charming relief plaque comes housed within its original stained circular wood frame with its gorgeous patina. This item also comes complete with its delicious 19th century wavy glass with THE most fantastic bubble to its center (almost a miniature bullion) and it also comes complete with original silk hanger, backing paper and 19th century inscription “The Death of Gessler By The Arrow of William Tell 1307”.
The outer frame measures just less than 3 5/8” by 0.5”. The inner composition relief visibly measures 2 5/8” diameter.
Please closely study this plaque as you will be astounded at the level of three dimensional details in such a minute scale. The material used is a type of dry sand colored clay with some some very minor disintegration/ flaking at 6 o clock. This would have been impressed from a mould, possibly a medallion struck in honor?? One can clearly see the raised, original maker’s initials of HB almost as if it was carved into the stone with exquisite foliage surrounding it.
This is a FINE Georgian period piece and not a later Victorian, less accomplished example. One word of caution, we would not advise hanging this plaque from its original silk tab, the tab is ancient and appears sturdy but we would hate for it to give way!!
