Circa 1888 French Hand Painted Sevres Style Porcelain Plate Marie Elisabeth D'Orleans Duchesse Du Berry

This is a superb porcelain plate from a top quality porcelain manufacturer. The hand painted portrait is astonishingly beautiful and is fully signed to the reverse C H Millan 1888. The porcelain is snow white and the gold dentril border consists of luxuriously buttery, high carat gilding. This wonderful cabinet plate would have been one from a larger service of fellow French aristocratic members - see the Sevres Chateau Des Tuileries examples which include this depiction of the Duchess Du Berry. Although, we have to say, that the hand painted portrait on our plate really does equal if not surpass those examples.

Size: 8 5/8" diameter.

This plate is ideal for a French history lover as it depicts Madame Marie Louise Elisabeth D'Orléans, Duchess of Berry (1695-1719). This depiction is after the 1840 engraving by Delpech. The design for this plate was registered in 1884 as shown by the early Registered Design numbers 10361 found printed in the red triangle to the reverse of the plate. Marie elisabeth was the eldest daughter of Philippe II Duke of Orleans, she later married Charles Duke of Berry. This plate depicts her as an 18th century young lady. The hand painting is very accomplished and we adore the enamel highlights in her hair and to the front of her dress. She sits very regally wearing her pearl earrings, piled hair with tumbling, powdered ringlets and regal ermine cape. C H Millan the artist has signed and dated the plate to the rear and also given the name of the sitter. You will also find impressed numbers 11/87 to the rear of the plate and a porcelain manufacturers impressed mark that we cannot decipher as it is obscured by the Elizabeth d'Orleans script.

Condition is excellent with exceedingly minor gold border rubbing between 11 and 1 o'clock.
