A fantastically accomplished unframed needlework and painting on laid paper dating to the 1790 to 1810 period. French in origin, this spectacular embroidery can be viewed from both sides as both sides are equally beautiful. This is just one of a rare collection of similar 18th Colifichet embroideries, each retailed individually...see last image.

The technique of double faced embroidery probably originated in China. It was not taught to British girls except for those girls who were sent to Catholic Europe to complete their education. French nuns during the 17th century used the word 'Colifichet' to describe their own very fine embroideries that were worked on both faces of a sheet of vellum, later paper. The unique point being that both sides of a Colifichet are the same with no loose threads or untidiness that you would expect to find on the reverse of a usual needlework. Our last but one image shows a light placed behind to illuminate the laid paper.

The oval painting and embroidery depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola born 1491, died 1556. He was a Spanish mystic and theologian who was at the forefront of the Catholic counter reformation during the 16th century. He was founder of the Jesuit, Society of Jesus. His open book reads For The Greater Glory of God, the society motto.

We adore his painted face and beard, and the gold JHS appearing to him top left. Also study the silk stitching...immaculate to both sides!!
