A rare EXTRA LARGE map sampler depicting Europe and beyond. Wrought on fine canvas with silk embroidered stitching. Little Harriet Manning, aged 12 years from St Nicholas School, was not only demonstrating her needlework skills in 1864 but also expanding her Geographical knowledge. The list of countries, rivers and mountain ranges is vast and makes for a fascinating delve in to the past and how the world has changed. We adore her choice of Gothic script.
Please excuse the angle from which the main image was taken, the sampler and frame are perfectly square, we tried to minimise the reflection on the glass. All images have been taken in natural daylight.
Throughout the 18th and 19th century map samplers were a popular subject, the chosen map was firstly drawn onto the canvas by the pupil or her teacher, ready for embroidery. Little individual flourishes could be added by the pupil. Dear Harriet has chosen bright crimson silk thread for the EUROPE title in eyelet stitch. Red, perhaps a favourite color also chosen for her name, school and date.
To whet your appetite here is a list of some of Harriet's embroidered inclusions:
