Georgian Mezzotint Engraving Contemplation after Cipriani English Circa 1791
We are delighted to offer this fine 18th century original colored mezzotint. This large beauty will look stunning on any wall, period or modern as its softness and grace cannot fail to appeal.
This original mezzotint depicts a mother and her child in fond embrace. The original painting of this subject was in the possession of the Liverpool brewing family of Daniel Daulby (1745-1798). Daniel was a famous Rembrandt collector. The original mother and child subject was painted by Giovanni Baptista Cipriani and most likely was inspired by the many historical Madonna and Child paintings.
Housed within a period Hogarth frame and under old glass. The colors and detailing are beautifully crisp. This engraving has been trimmed outside of its plate marks. Bottom left "Painted by G B Cipriani - Contemplation - From The original picture in the collection of Daniel Daulby Esq of Liverpool". There are not any engravers details to this engraving.
Size: Framed 17" by 12.75". The visible engraving within plate marks 12.5" (32 cm) by 9.75" (25 cm)
Condition: This is an original antique engraving. There is general age dust and debris trapped under the glass. There is rubbing to the impressed plate marks and some light foxing to the old unbleached paper. However, nothing too detrimental at all. The period frame has a few light knocks to the gesso decoration and a few gilded touch ups but again nothing untoward. We will tape and secure the old backing board for transit.
