This is a World War II 1940’s vintage pin, very meaningful for someone who has a loved one serving our nation. The eagle can signify Army but is also perfect for any branch of the military as it is from the Great Seal of the US, with the words “e pluribus unum” (out of the many one-our national motto) This marvel is as appropriate today as it was when made. It is Sterling silver with red, white, and blue enamel in fabulous condition. This lovely pin is 1and 1/4 of an inch tall altogether, and 1/2 of an inch wide, perfect for a collar or lapel. The back of both pieces is marked Sterling. This Armed Services themed pin is in very good vintage condition, with a warm vintage patina. The tiny 1/4 of an inch pin stem and the old c clasp are in perfect working condition. Just as sentimental and patriotic today as it was 70 years ago, this great little pin shows you care, and support our troops and loved ones from the homefront.
A little research revealed that the first “in service” pin for military families and sweethearts was made by R. L. Queisser, a former U.S. Army officer, in honor of his two sons who were serving in Europe during World War I. It caught on, and was made commercially; an ad appeared in a 1917 issue of the National Geographic. After that, a variety of these types of pins became very popular. It was during World War II, however, that they really took off, and in the 1940’s became a common sight across America.
