This sterling Forget-Me-Not bracelet is from World War II military era /1945. Engraved with the names of loved ones for remembrance, this one has a gorgeous US Army Air Corps insignia/emblem on it. The Army Air Corps became the Air Force in 1948., During World War II these were very popular, a way to keep far away loved ones close to the heart. These “homefront” or "sweetheart" items were often worn to show support for the war effort and/or for those in service; these wonderfully sentimental war era beauties are getting harder to find. It has 10 links total plus the clasp., a longer length than most. Each link is 5/8 of an inch long and 7/16 of an inch tall. The total length is 7 and 3/8 inches, or 18.8 cm. Links are easily removed if a smaller size is desired. Each of the links other than the US AAC has the pretty forget me not flower bordering a name; the hook style clasp is 1/8 of an inch shorter than the others. The links read: love, blank link, Jo, Edna, from, Virginia, N.P., Gwen, 1945. These are very light and not easy to read without magnification. The clasp is not engraved. Of course, your jeweler can buff these names out personalize it for you if desired. Each link is connected to the next with sterling fold over connector pieces. All are marked Sterling forget me not on the back, except the AAC link and clasp, which only say Sterling. This lovely style bracelet is featured on page 128 of the book A Century of Jewelry, Classy, Flashy and Trashy, by Deborah Crosby, 2005 ed. This marvel has that warm, subtly glowing vintage patina only fine older silver pieces have, and could be polished to look like new. It is very sturdy and well crafted, a wonderful way to show your patriotism and support for a loved one in service to our country or to honor a veteran. In excellent condition, this one is very special!
The story of these unique and now hard to find bracelets is that a friend or relative bought a link, had their own name engraved on it, and gave it to the bracelet owner. When there was no engraver around, each giver might "engrave" his/her own name with the point of a needle, or sometimes a member of the circle of friends and family would do all the "engraving".
