Superb piece of Oil Company history. This dates to the early 1900's (pre-1920).
This is a huge and heavy cast iron sign made for The Prudential Oil Corporation.
This sign weighs approximately 40 lbs.
77 5/8" long (over 6 feet!)
5 3/8" wide
It is SOLID cast iron so it is quite a substantial piece and will last for many millenia.
There are 3 mounting holes as shown. The sign is painted black and the letters and borders are raised and painted gold. The sign is in excellent condition with no issues. There is light paint wear here and there as expected with it's age.
This is really a superb collectible and so much more substantial than a thin tin Oil Company or Railroad sign that you see selling for huge amounts. It is cast in a manner similar to the way they made Railroad industry signs in the 1800's. This piece is investment quality.
The sign will hang easily and looks great on the wall. Perfect for a den, man cave, garage or office.
We believe that this sign would have graced the corporate headquarters of Prudential Oil Corporation. We doubt that this sign would have hung anywhere but on the building of the main office. It seems more suited to Wall Street than Main Street.
We are not petroleum industry historians so we will leave it to collectors to determine which Prudential Oil this sign belonged to. One was out of Baltimore and was acquired by Marland / Continental / Conoco / ConocoPhillips. Another was out of New York in Rockefeller Center and another was out of Calgary, Alberta Canada. There were also Prudential Oil Companies from Texas and from Kansas City.
Also of interest, there was a Prudential Oil & Refining Company from Illinois that was a stock scam executed by Seymour E. J. "Alphabet" Cox. He was convicted in 1924. In an article entitled, "Pirates of Promotion," The Worlds Work magazine quoted Cox extolling the virtues of a breakthrough mechanical technology – which did not, and still does not, exist. "During the last four months the Prudential Oil and Refining Company has been in control of a machine which locates the oil," the magazine quotes one Cox promotion, "thus eliminating every possibility of failure that has formerly been the bugaboo of the oil business...It is almost impossible for the human mind to conceive of the money in unlimited millions of dollars that will come to the coffers of the Prudential Oil and Refining Company as a result of this machine."
