Japanese Edo Period Bronze Picture Frame
Beautifully detailed cast bronze frame featuring 2 dragons.
This frame was mounted on the wall of a Japanese ship that was built in the 1840's.
This is a finely made Japanese bronze sculpture. Superb detail right down to the scales on the dragons.
It is cast bronze.
10 5/8" wide
The opening where the picture would go is 8 1/4" by 6".
The frame weighs 3 lb. 2 oz.
It is marked inside in black as shown. The maker is unknown by us.
It has developed a wonderful patina over the last 150+ years. It is in perfect condition with no damage to any of the fine details.
It is not shiny as may appear in the 1st photo. It is a deep rich bronze with some greening from being on the sea for all those years. The photos taken without the flash show the rich patina.
The backing is in fair condition, as shown. It is usable or can be replaced easily. It certainly shows the age of this fine frame. It was originally attached to the frame but now is loose. The frame was mounted on the wall so you can see the mounting holes in the frame. These same holes originally attached the backing to the frame. When it was removed from the wall in the ship the backing would have come loose.
The photos show this great piece - email with questions or comments.
