MAKE US AN OFFER - WE ARE READY TO SELL!!!!
This ONE OF A KIND trophy was presented to Leroy & Lucile Melcher at the 1993 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HLSR) commemorating their purchase of the Grand Champion Steer for $350,000.00 which was a NEW WORLD RECORD price paid for a steer.
The Sculptor, Jim Reno (1929 - 2008):
The statue was done by Jim Reno who "...is one of America's foremost sculptors, and has gained a reputation as the "Horseman's Sculptor." An Artist of the Year for the state of Texas, Reno's ability to capture a horse's action as well as its personality has made him the choice portrait sculptor..."
JIM RENO COLLECTORS:
Because this statue was made specifically for the HLSR for this award it is a VERY limited edition. These were not available for sale and only given to Champion Livestock buyers. If this statue was to appear for sale (without the 1993 Grand Champion pedigree) it may sell for up to $6,500.00 based on the price for extremely limited editions on Jim Reno's website and also resellers or his work websites.
This extremely rare example will continue to appreciate in value! Mr. Reno passed away in 2008 so his works have become even more valuable.

LeRoy Melcher was an enterprising giant who revolutionized the food brokerage business, transforming grocery outlets into convenience stores that offered hurried consumers with household items and prepared meals. The Texas native acquired the UtoteM Food Store chain when it had only 10 outlets in 1953 and expanded the operation to more than 1,000 locations across 13 states. In the process, he helped facilitate the "to-go" consumer behavior of mobile and busy Americans today. Melcher's business acumen was later exceeded by his philanthropy. He made contributions totaling more then $8 million to the University of Houston, his alma mater.
Over the years they purchased at least 13 steers at the HLSR and spent $1,600,000.00.
