An Antique Pair of 1850 Irish Bog Oak Thimble Holder Owls sewing Accessories. The bog oak is 5000 years old and the thimble holders were hand carved in 1850.
They are both 1 3/4 inches high. One holds a small thimble and the other holds a large thimble. The diameters of the thimbles are 1/2 inch and 5/8th of an inch.
They are dated to 1850 and both have the original eyes. They are in excellent condition. One has the name Killarney carved on it. This is a famous Irish place of superb natural beauty which Queen Victoria visit in the late 1840s and made it a 'must see' destination for early tourists. These little souvenir pieces were carved from 5000 year old bog oak.
This pair are very interesting because one is slender and the other is more rotund. I think the carver created Mr and Mrs Owl with appropriate sized thimbles. The thimbles are not old but are part of this sale.
