An 1880 French children's tea set complete with original box and a fabulous history .
The box measures 9 inches by 6 inches. The saucers are 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The tea or coffee pot is 2 inches high.
The Brown family in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, England had a saddlery shop in the 1870/1880s. There were two daughters Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Florence Victoria. Lizzie received this tea set as a present in the 1880s. Unfortunately she passed away at ten years old and the set was passed on to Florence Victoria. Later in life she married and became Florence Victoria Dawson. Her son Harold Dawson preserved the set in memory of Lizzie his aunt and Florence Victoria his mother. He also recorded a written record of these facts together with a picture of his grand father and his mother as a young girl outside the shop.
The box was repaired which helped preserve the set. Two cups were repaired sometime in the past otherwise the set is in good condition and complete including the lids for the sugar bowl and the tea pot.
The history of this tea set deserves an honoured place of prominence in your collection.
