An Art Nouveau French table serving set. The handles are French silver and both are marked in two places with the Minerva hallmark of Quality Silver. They are also marked with the maker's mark with the initials A.T.
They both measure 10 1/2 inches and weigh 4 1/2 ounces.
The box measures 13 inches by 4 inches by 2 inches.
The spoon and fork are both made from celluloid. Celluloid was invented in the 1850s and because it was scarce and seen to be an exotic material it was used in high class items such as this set.
The design and decoration of the handles is classic Art Nouveau with curving trailing plants. In this set, the flowering thistle is the predominant plant used in the decoration. This may suggest a Scottish connection as the thistle is the national flower of Scotland.
This set is in excellent condition. There are no splits or cracks. The spoon and the fork are securely attached to the handles. The outer box has some normal usage wear and the silk lining has some foxing. The box is marked A Hislen, Bijoutier, Bruxelles or Brussels.
