For sale is this RARE and wonderful item. This is an original French painting from the 1800s, which was likely what is called a "cartoon" for making tapestry pieces. Tapestry or "Aubusson" cartoons are the life size models from which tapestries are woven. These were painted in oil on canvas or gouache on paper (such as this example). The wools and silks were dyed to match the painting, and the weaver then copied it. Working with the cartoon under the warp threads of the loom, at a rate of approximately two square meters per month, per worker, the final tapestry slowly appeared.
This is a lovely large and well balanced example of the art form. It depicts a floral bouquet with a number of different flowers within a swag frame. The colors are a bit muted with time and it has minor condition issues consistent with its age of 150+ years old.
The painting has been professionally framed and is ready to hang. It measures 34" x 28.5" framed. I was told that this was purchased in France and hung for a time in the Ralph Lauren store on Rodeo Drive.
