This example is a modern reproduction vanity tray or soap dish in the form of a nude young lady sitting on the edge of her bath. Made in lead crystal by a contemporary Czech Republic glass manufacturer, under their brand name of Desna, this item is Art Deco in style because products bearing the Desna name are reproductions of period designs originally created by such well known makers as Henry Schlevogt or Heinrich Hofffmann. Signed 'Desna' on the bottom, this mark has been used since 2002.
The makers of Desna pieces clearly mark the items they make, so it would seem the pieces may be considered more an homage to the great glass designers of the past, rather than an attempt to be deceptive. But because novice collectors may not be aware that the mark on such a piece is an indication it is contemporary, mistakes can easily be made when purchasing on the secondary market. Also when buying keep in mind that some unscrupulous glass sellers may find a way to remove a new maker's mark and add a false (and older) maker's mark in its place.
