This example illustrates yet another reproduction pickle castor set. A well known reproduction wholesale supplier still sells this silver colored frame with lid on their website. The ornate pickle tongs, too. The frame is offered alone or paired with buyer's choice of different colored glass inserts. Familiarizing yourself with the features of the metal frame and tongs can make it easier to spot this marriage of brand new frame with different new glass inserts when found sitting amongst real antique items at flea markets or for sale online.
If sold as 'old' a buyer who notices modern Phillips head screws are holding metal parts together may then be told the base had to be replaced, that only the glass is old. However, a picture of an original catalog page on Ruby Lane's Real or Repro reference site shows this same cranberry cut to clear insert was once sold together with this base, as a set. In the 1960's and 1970's the L.G. Wright company sold brand new pickle castors with the same fancy 'bird' frame along with glass inserts made by various glass companies. They sold their fanciful 'antique look' creations to the same reproduction wholesale supplier where they are still available today, with new imported cut glass inserts. See this shop's Favorite Links page for a link to Real or Repro, where catalog images mentioned above may be examined.
The individual pieces of these sets typically bear no permanent markings that would help identify them. But that characteristic itself becomes a clue, since it would be very unusual to find a true Victorian era silver-plated metal item to be totally unmarked as to maker or silver content.
For another example with a red glass insert cut in a different design see Item ID: 2007RP000370 here in this shop.
The glass insert measures 4 inches tall by 3 1/4 inches wide at the top, with a 2 7/8 inch base. The stand is 10 1/2 inches tall. The tongs are 6 inches long.
