This fantasy example was designed to look as if its decorative design were painted by hand, but the floral sprays of delicate pink flowers on a matte surface with gold painted edges is a modern machine applied pattern cataloged as 'Wildflower.' Pieces in this line, clearly and falsely marked "Hand-Painted" and "Nippon" on their bottoms are currently still available from a reproduction wholesale source.
The hourglass center in the mark on the base of this item was never a part of any authentic mark from the Nippon era, this is an entirely modern mark. While the wreath portion looks similar to a wreath in some authentic Nippon era marks, in this false mark it is upside down from the orientation of wreaths in original maker's marks.
Additional items decorated with this same modern pattern and spurious 'Nippon' mark can be seen here in this shop under Item IDs 2007RP000353, 2007RP000221 and 2007RP000416.
Measures 6 1/4 inches by 4 7/8 inches.
