This example is a cast iron reproduction toy with "Crash Car" molded into the sides to assist it in being mistaken for a very collectible old three wheeled red motorcycle 'Midget' toy made by the Hubley company. Authentic larger variations of Hubley's Indian Motorcycle "Crash Car" with original accessories can sell for thousands, making it one of the most desirable cast iron motorcycle toys. So it isn't surprising to find even the smaller Midget examples have caught the eye of reproduction wholesalers.
New collectors often equate 'crude' with 'old' but in reality only newly made fakes like this are poorly made, with childish looking paint jobs quickly applied at the factory to cut down on cost. Original examples were made of quality components with excellent attention to detail.
In this listing we have included a picture of an original Hubley "Crash Car" toy so the viewer can compare the reproduction to it. On the contemporary item be sure to note poor casting, exceedingly bad painting (especially on the driver's face) and the modern Phillips head screw in the driver's side. Also note the black tires were cast from the same heavy metal as the body. Original toys made pre-WW II came with white rubber tires. The fact the maker used modern hex domed nuts at the wheels in an attempt to simulate the steel bolt tire mounts on originals should remove any doubt as to whether or not these new items were made purposefully to deceive buyers.
Real Midget size Hubley Crash Cars measure 4 3/4 inches long, 2 1/4 inches tall and 2 1/4" wide. This reproduction is similarly sized at approximately 4 1/2 inches long, by 2 1/2 inches tall.
