Here is another example of fake 'Satsuma' pottery being made in China and exported to the West in great numbers. This particular item actually has 'Satsuma' printed on the bottom. The mark seen on this item, the word Satsuma printed in red font, in a red rectangle, is a Chinese factory mark. These are very new items and large numbers of them should still be readily available on the market for very nominal prices - as decorative items - so beware and don't overpay.
Authentic Japanese Satsuma pottery distinguishes itself with a finely crackled transparent glaze on a beige or creamy ground. Fine craqueleur of the glaze was done purposefully at manufacture for decorative effect. While early Satsuma may bear little or no decoration, the nineteenth and early twentieth century ware that many of today's collectors seek was decorated with gold and hand painted artwork.
This item does exhibit a softly crackled glaze and nicely gilt bird-shaped handles. Both the enameled decoration and gold may help to add decorative appeal, but they cannot add any real extra value. Like other examples already listed in this shop this item lacks the artistic quality of real Satsuma pottery. The surface decoration is primarily of the transfer print type, with colors afterward applied to the pre-printed design. This piece was decorated primarily, if not entirely, by machine, not by the hand of a skilled artist, as was real Satsuma.
Printing the word 'Satsuma' on a an item cannot make it something it is not. Satsuma is and always has been entirely Japanese pottery. It was never originally made in China or anywhere else, only Japan. If a mark or paper label indicates a pottery item was made anywhere other than Japan, it cannot be Satsuma. If the body of an item marked with a 'Satsuma' mark is porcelain, it is not Satsuma, since true Satsuma is earthenware.
Measures 11 1/2 inches, 7 inches across at the handles and 5 inches deep.
