This example is a fake lock and key set made of iron. A brass plate at the back identifies this padlock as "Property of Pony Express, Station #79." While that station may have existed in history, this lock, like many thousands of other similar false items bearing the Pony Express name, has no connection to it. The lock is fully functional and despite its rusty visage it has not seen years of use. It's a new import. These kinds of items that are specifically manufactured to look 'antique' have the ability to fool novice collectors. Especially if a seller's description gives information that is not accurate. Spuriously marked 'Wild West' items like this are of no value at all to collectors.
Be alert for varied types of modern reproductions, fakes and fantasy advertising, Wild West (lawmen, Pony Express, Wells Fargo), prison and railroadiana lock and key sets made in iron or brass. For more information on fake and reproduction locks with spurious markings visit individual reference sites mentioned on the Favorite Links page in this shop.
