This example is a new fake in the form of an egg shaped hinged box on a three footed pedestal base. It is decorated with pretty, old-fashioned florals and the base is marked with a wreath and the initials 'R S.'
This new mark is intended to suggest it is a porcelain piece made in a Schlegelmilch factory long ago, since the mark resembles a wreath mark sometimes seen on authentic R.S. Prussia porcelain. The mark is of course notably lacking any actual printed mention of 'Prussia,' but this omission does not prevent a novice mistake from possibly being made. Many recent fakes imported by wholesale reproduction houses are all too often eventually sold later to the unsuspecting as 'authentic' R.S. Prussia items. If a potential buyer has not handled sufficient numbers of authentic articles to be able to quickly know them by body or decoration, they may easily mistakenly buy false items for the real thing because a specious mark was all that was used to incorrectly 'identify' a piece.
Though a nice and very attractive decorative item, the quality of the porcelain and decal decoration of this lidded box is not comparable to authentic R.S. Prussia porcelain. The shape is likewise not comparable to a known example. These types of decorative fakes generally only succeed in mimicking true Schlegelmilch porcelain. And nefarious sellers will suggest they are indeed selling RS Prussia, even if they know this is not true. Because selling as 'authentic and old' means the seller can garner a huge profit on a $15 dollar item they purchased new at a wholesale price, and which they can then also easily replace in inventory - and sell again and again.
This item measures 5 1/2 inches by 3 inches wide.
