This example is another fake Western themed belt buckle bearing a well-known and respected name 'Wells Fargo'. Many similar buckle designs began to appear some years ago and these are covered in detail in other listings in this shop.

This item has a highly detailed image of a Pony Express-type rider on Horse back on the front along with, "Wells Fargo Guard Services Baker Industries." The makers of this buckle may have been familiar with a Baker Industries connection to Wells Fargo in the late 1960's or early 1970's, when many of these types of buckles began to appear on the market. It was probably assumed that connection went back to a much earlier period. But both of these company names being present on a supposedly 'antique' or 'very old' belt buckle is actually an anachronism. Baker Industries did begin in the very early 20th century - but in the fire extinguisher trade. Protecting buildings from fire had nothing to do with horses and riders. They had no connection to Wells Fargo at all, until 1967.

Another indication of the fraudulent status of this buckle is found in the mark stamped on back which is, unfortunately, not clearly readable in this listing. The mark may say, "Tiffany 221 Regent St. London England" but, that company did not actually make this buckle. When it comes to an item supposedly made by such a well known maker, don't look at the mark, look at the item. This can sometimes be difficult to do if initial excitement at being presented with the opportunity to own a Tiffany marked item clouds your judgment. Fakers count on this, too. So, look at the item, not the name. Only items of high quality will bear an authentic Tiffany mark. This item lacks the degree of quality one should expect, and the price reflects this state, too.

The producer of earlier fantasy ‘Tiffany’ marked buckles made up a fake book about them and paid to have it printed. They then sold the book to help give credence to the many fantasy buckle designs they were making at the time – because those items were illustrated and described as if desirable antiques in their book. This complicated effort was done for the sole purpose of 'authenticating' fakes and fantasy items of their own fabrication, as noted in Item ID: 2007RP00049 here in this shop.

This buckle measures 3 1/2 inches by 3 inches.
