This example is a fake scuttle style shaving mug or cup wearing dainty pink flowers on an off-white background and a false 'Limoges' printed mark. The mark on this individual piece was badly applied in great haste at the repro factory and so it is very blurred, but it can be viewed more clearly in listing for Item ID: 2007RP000137 here in this shop.

This item was most likely entirely machine decorated, not hand painted, though it will generally be found described as decorated by hand.

Other features that can be observed on this mug are typical of new 'Limoges' replicas. Certain characteristics should always be expected for authentic Limoges porcelain. Though an item may bear a mark suggesting that it was made in Limoges, France, if it lacks the kind of quality one expects for Limoges then that one fact alone can help to identify it as a counterfeit. True Limoges porcelain was and is finely made. This means the body will be thinly potted and translucent. If not fine translucent porcelain, it is not Limoges. It can easily be seen that the item illustrated in this listing has a body that is thick and chunky in appearance. So much so that it may not even qualify to be identified as porcelain.

Wholesale sources began to offer brand new 'antique style' shaving mugs for 'decorative' purposes and gifting as soon as the prices for authentic pieces began a serious climb in the 1970's. But according to information in Gaston's, 'Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain' the crowned swords fake 'Limoges' mark shown began to appear only near the beginning of the 21st century. Which would mean any item bearing this particular false stamped mark is very new, indeed.

As a rule we recommend not relying on marks alone in identifying an object, because they can be added or altered or be spurious to begin with, but when items are marked with this kind of specious stamp, it can be used to quickly identify the item. Because it was never used in the dim and distant past, only in contemporary times.

Exact measurements unavailable, but likely approximately 3 1/4 inches tall.
