With the recent re-opening of the Washington Monument after a 2-1/2 year closure for repairs following an earthquake in 2011, perhaps this rare 1923 visitor’s guide will be of interest. What a delightful piece of our history. Lots of wonderful original photographs of construction including setting of the capstone in 1884 (see photos).
Just in case you’ve climbed those stairs and tried to count them, the booklet can tell you: 898. Original price was 15-cents. Copyrighted in 1923 by the Society of American Military Engineers and published in limited edition by the Victory Printing Co., Baltimore, this 32-page booklet explains the history and construction of this national treasure.
Opened to the public in 1888, the Monument was only 35 years old when this pamphlet was published - almost still new. The cover shows its age and the back page is torn. But it is a thrill to read. For the last several years it has been kept in a plastic cover.
