An exceptionally nice old pattern from Johnson Brothers first produced in 1921. Decorated with a narrow colorful floral border framed with tiny pink lines and around the edge of each piece are gold edges even on the handles of the serving dishes. All inherited from my grandmother who was married in 1925 and reserved for holidays and special occasions and kept safely in her corner china cabinet. Bagatelle is easily identified in the long line of dinnerware that Johnson Brothers has produced over the past 100 years, but is not easily found available in today's market.
In addition to my memories back nearly 60 years, the age of this set has also been determined by the back stamp which does not include the statement that "All decoration under the glaze permanent and acid resisting colors" that was added at a later date on Johnson collections. Pareek listed on the backstamp is not the pattern name, but is the name given to the shape registered by Johnson Bros. and most distinctly recognized by the handles on serving pieces. Under the logo it simply reads `Johnson Bros. England' with the crown logo and the pattern name on each piece. Microwave and dishwasher use not recommended due to the gold edges.
All pieces in excellent condition with the exception of some of the dinner plates that have age-related crazing. Gold trim around the edges and on the handles shows little or no wear. A beautiful piece for the collector of Johnson Brothers early patterns. And it will serve well for that holiday turkey or roast beef. No cups or saucers. Note that the greatest value with this set are the five serving pieces and the sugar bowl in excellent condition. This set was recently appraised at a value of $450 to $550. Very convenient to have the gravy bowl and plate in one piece and I can remember this piece sitting on my grandmother's dining room table filled with steaming hot turkey gravy. Lift the lid from this server and I can still see it heaped with fluffy mashed potatoes and butter melting down into the valleys and ridges. Set includes the following pieces:
Dinner plates (13) 10-inch; Dessert plates (3) 7-inch; Soup bowls (5) 7 ½-inch; Sugar Bowl with lid; Gravy bowl with underplate; Covered serving dish 8-inches; Oval Server (w/handles) 11-inch; Platter w/handles 16-inch; Platter w/handles 11 3/4-inch
