An original print of Truman’s 1949 State of the Union Address, given two weeks before the inauguration, is also included. The deluxe program announces the important event of Truman’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 1949. An unknown number of these special edition inaugural programs were presented to contributors and supporters. Most or all of them were numbered and signed by Melvin D. Hildreth, General Chairman of the Inaugural Committee. This particular edition is marked in red # 698. In excellent condition, it has been kept in its original sleeve (now deteriorated beyond repair) and was part of an estate from a gentleman in Talbot County, Maryland, who was my grandfather.
The official Inaugural program is bound into the deluxe edition and is still in pristine condition. The program includes information about several inauguration events including the parade and other proceedings, historic items and casual photographs of the Truman and Barkley families. On one of the opening pages is a copy of a typewritten letter signed by President Truman which ends “With God’s help we shall move forward together.”
The House of Representatives print of his State of the Union Address given on Jan. 5, 1949 to a joint session of the 81st Congress (Document No. 1) is shown in the photographs and included with this purchase. It is my grandfather’s handwriting on the print of the Jan. 5th speech which asks that the two items be kept together.
While Truman had just been elected President in November 1948 for the first time, as Vice President he had assumed the Presidency in April 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This explains how he gave the State of the Union Address two weeks before he was inaugurated. The program contains 72 numbered pages. Measures 8-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches.
