Although a condensed version of Roots was published first in Reader's Digest in 1974, the full version wasn't released until two years later in 1976. Instantly a cultural sensation, the book enjoyed more than 20 weeks at the top of the New York Times Best Seller List. Author Alex Haley earned a special Pulitzer Prize award the following year. In 1977 the story was also televised in a popular miniseries. The book and the TV series were credited with the sudden increase in research of family history.
