You may have to be over 55 to enjoy this little book by award-winning English novelist, Elizabeth Goudge (1900-1984). A prolific writer of adult novels and children's books with an undertone of moral and religious convictions which is unobtrusively intertwined throughout her stories. Pilgrim's Inn (also titled Herb of Grace) was published in 1948, the second of her Eliots of Damerosehay series which were published between 1940 and 1957. Others of her novels have done quite well. One as a television mini-series and later a film.
I have recently read this book and found it delightful reading as the characters took shape with their foibles and personalities finally blending into a touching finale - all based around the old inn and its history.
Other well-known novels are: The Little White Horse (1946) and Green Dolphin Street (1944). This book is a book club edition, published in New York by Coward-McCann Inc. with 346 pages and drawings of the characters on the inside front and back cover. Measures 8-1/2 by 5-3/4 inches. Original dust jacket shows wrinkles and small tears, but has done its intended purpose, leaving the book in excellent condition. Previous owner label inside. 1948 Book Club edition.
