Antique 1860's - 1880's Victorian Mourning Jewelry Whitby Jet Wide Etched Plaque Expansion Bracelet.
This piece is an absolutely incredible example of Whitby Jet Mourning Jewelry. Comprised of large black faceted rectangular pieces of polished Whitby Jet....pierced and strung into this stunning and substantial bracelet. The eight sided or octagon center plaque and the two plaques on either shoulder are etched or chased in a lovely floral and fleur de lis pattern. The bracelet is strung on black elastic cord that will expand to stretch over the hand.
Queen Victoria of England wore Whitby Jet Jewelry while mourning the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert....beginning in the 1860's and lasting the remainder of her lifetime. Hence making it fashionable during this era.
Bracelet measures 7 inches inside circumference (around) and expands about 1-1/2 inch. Each of the identical rectangular jet plaques measure 1-1/8 inches high by x 1/2 inch wide. The center octagon plaque measures 1-5/8 inches long by 7/8 inches wide.
Bracelet is unsigned. Origin: Whitby England.
Bracelet weighs 20.3 grams.
The elastic is not quite as tight as it once was. Could be a bit loose if you have a smaller wrist. May be easily restrung should you desire to do so. Antique condition is otherwise excellent. Find!
