Antique Early 1900's Cabochon Moonstone Scorpion Sterling Figural Brooch.
This is a wonderful brooch comprised of a sterling silver scorpion with claws extended...set with three good sized domed shape cabochon moonstones along the shoulders and an additional three moonstones that are slightly smaller and graduated in size down the spine. The moonstones are a beautiful luminous cloud color with a hint of blue grey. The scorpion is embellished with tiny sapphire cabochon eyes. The tail has a twisted design finished with a slightly coiled end. Old simple c clasp closure.
The scorpion is also the symbol for sign of the zodiac....Scorpio.
Brooch is unsigned. Tested positive for sterling.
Weight is 0.25 ozt (troy ounces) correct measurement for sterling or 7.9 grams
Brooch measures 3-1/8 inches long by 1-1/4 inches wide. Moonstones along the shoulders measure approximately 7 millimeters in size with the moonstones along the spine graduating from 5-6 millimeters in size.
The sapphire eyes are just a little bit rough when viewed under magnification. Probably as originally set. Not really discernible to the naked eye. Vintage condition is otherwise excellent. Stinging!
