Antique English Jacobean Crewel Embroidered Stumpwork Slips / Spot Motifs

Dating from early 17th Century

Depicting Jacobean Flowers and Plants. Lovely central Pomegranate. Lion, Rabbit, Snails and Dragonfly

Beautifully hand embroidered in coloured wool and silk , slightly raised / three dimensional stump work.

Worked on a felted wool broad cloth.

Salvaged from a Jacobean Bed Hanging circa 1610

Later mounted in an 18th century hardwood frame behind a glass cover

The slips are well preserved and is in good antique condition considering they are approx Four Hundred years old. Un faded and in my opinion the most sought after colour pallet, as seen on many magnificent Elizabethan needlework boxes, pillows and framed pictures.. The frame is in an antique condition with general wear ad antique insect holes mainly on right hand side (insects now long gone) Please study photographs

I am astonished to have been fortunate enough to acquire an entire private estate collection. All matching and from the same hanging.

Advanced collectors will know just how rare these slips are. Usually only seen in Historic English House collections and Museums. In my opinion no textile collection is complete without one.

SIZE Frame is 21.5 inches wide x 15 inches high

A 'slip' is an embroidered motif, usually a plant or flower with the heel or base showing, but insects and animals were also popular motifs. Embroidered 'slips' acquired their name from gardeners' slips or cuttings, used to propagate plants. This embroidery was popular from the mid-16th century to the mid-17th century.

Worked in wool and silk on linen canvas in tent or cross stitch, slips were cut out and applied to a wool or velvet background for use as bed curtains, hangings, cushions etc. Sometimes many hundreds of small pieces were applied to one hanging. Often they were naive in design and out of scale, but nonetheless identifiable and accurate in their rendering.
