This is a superb example of a 19th Century, Italian painted console with a very tall, triple-paneled mirror above. It has been painted a pale green with gilt highlights on the raised areas throughout. Motifs of the stylized shell, scrolling acanthus leaves, flowers, and C and S scrolls ornament the two pieces. The three mirrors are all beveled and are original to the piece. The top of the console has been covered with fabric, which may have had marble in its place at one time. Consoles with mirrors were symbols of prestige in Chateaux, homes, and castles in Europe during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This particular piece would have been in a large room with tall ceilings. It will be a focal point anywhere it is placed.
CONDITION: Good condition. Minor areas of missing paint and gilding. Minor nicks, chips and age separations.
