Originally part of a larger Baroque wall hanging that was hand-woven in Audenarde in the 1600’s, these two tapestry fragments have been repurposed into a pair of pillows. Audenarde (or Oudenaarde in Dutch) is part of the Flemish province of East Flanders in Belgium, roughly 30 kilometers from the French border. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, Audenarde was the center of tapestry production in Europe.

The fragments were part of a border that framed a larger tapestry scene. The segments are different sizes, leading to the creation of two different sized pillows. However, both feature a medallion displaying a tree-lined pasture. The trees are surrounded by scrolls and a foliate background and have a warm color, thanks to the use of green and gold threads. The larger pillow has two stripes flanking the cartouche (one navy and the other a light red), while the smaller one has a single burgundy stripe along the right side.

The tapestry fragments are surrounded by gold and silver fringe that is attached by a gold gimp border with an undulating weave. Small tassels in the shape of stylized flowers are attached every few inches. The back of each is finished in beige velvet, adding to the softness of the pillows.

Our tapestry pillows from 17th century Audenarde fragments are great accessories to have in a living room or bedroom. As throw pillows, they can be placed on a chair or couch, or used as an accent pillow for a bed. They be placed in a vertical or horizontal fashion.
