This pair of large French candlesticks from the 1700’s has been masterfully hand-carved. They retain their original grayish-green parcel paint where traces of the gesso and old gilding can be seen. The candlesticks alternate between rounded ornamentation and tapered columns before widening at the base.

The rim of the bobeche is adorned with a repeating cabochon pattern and sits on top of a cup of sinuous acanthus leaves and a ring of beading. The various and numerous detailed carvings include foliate rings and curls, gadrooning and beading. Towards the bottom of the column is a highly ornate tripod base adorned with cherub heads and floral margent that rest upon a caulicole of curled leaves.

At the top of the base are a set of three cherub heads with wings to their sides. In between each cherub is a floral and foliate embellishment that crowns a rounded cartouche surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves and a garland of flora. To the sides of the wreath are volute scrolls that terminate into monopodial ball and claw feet. The sides of the volutes are adorned with acanthus leaf curls that are in line with the cherub heads and feet. The tripartite plinth alternates convex and concave sides.

At more than 250 years of age and measuring over 40 inches tall, these French candlesticks are an impressive work of art. Place them on a table surface, large mantel or shelf.

CONDITION: Strong condition with wear commensurate to age and use. Age separations with losses and rubs as seen in photos.
