This 18th Century Boite de Tabac or Tobacco Box has been made from beautiful dark grey and white marble. Marble tobacco containers from France are relatively rare, as most were usually made from wood, metal or other materials. All of the carving has been sculpted out of the marble and not applied.

The box has a shaped bombe front and sides, that taper out toward the rear. The motifs on the front are a stylized rocaille shell set atop a raised rectangle with canted corners. The keyhole is within the upper portion of the shell inside a stylized heart motif. The corners protrude at an angle with more rocaille motifs. The sides have volute shaped handles carved out of the marble, and the top opens to two deep circular openings for the tobacco. All this rests upon four bronze bun feet. This elegant French Tobacco Box from the 18th Century will be a wonderful decorative accessory or for holding tobacco or small items.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with very minor chips and vein losses to marble. No key.
