This extraordinary antique French butcher’s counter with marble top and stripped oak body is from Lyon, France. The carving of the wood was done by a master of his craft, as shown by the meticulous detail of the rams’ heads and other motifs.
The carrera marble at the top conforms to a gadrooned, linear molding of egg and dart motifs below. There are volute shaped pilasters at the front corners which have stunning rams’ heads, or aegricanes motifs at the top. The Rams are separated by a cartouche having incised lines. Vines of flowers are beneath this, as well as scrolling floral vines on the sides of the pilasters. Fluting is beneath the frontal vines and ends with two cloven hooves per pilaster on stepped out blocks. The piece has a single drawer made from thick oak planks, and below that, is a door which opens to reveal interior storage. Two curved side panels also elegance and interest to the piece.
Versatile in its uses today, this stunning piece will be the focal point wherever it is placed.
CONDITION: Good condition with minor losses to wood, and old traces of woodworm. There is some slight discoloration in areas of marble, and tiny traces of old white paint.
