Code 914-37 Hunting Dog Painting by Edouard Joseph Dantan 1848-1897
This antique French gilt framed hunting painting depicts two bird dogs, one flat coated and one with long hair in the pointing position in a field of tall grasses and trees. In the foreground, a bird has been flushed out but does not appear to be the bird of choice. The painting was done by Edouard Joseph Dantan, who was born into a family of sculptors. Dantan was a pupil at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux- Arts in Paris and at the age of 19 received his first large mural commission. Dantan was a classical artist in style and he received a number of medals in his career.
This hunting painting is in superb condition and will be an attribute anywhere it is placed.
