Code 913-7 Early 1800s Forged Chateau Andirons from France
This magnificent pair of French Chateau iron chenets or andirons have varying motifs of scrolls throughout. The twist turned cup holders on top end in stylized scrolls as well as the pot holder hooks. At the base there is a continuous c-scroll on either side of the central shaft. A scrolled ribbon hangs between the two feet which are stylized petals.
The cups were used for heating bowls of food or cups of soup, coffee, or water, while the front hooks were stabilizers for horizontal iron rods from which pots and/or portions of meat were hung to cook.
These antique French chenets will enhance any fireplace.
Condition: Very good. Minor rusting and pitting to iron commensurate with age.
