From Normandy, this magnificent French trunk is made largely of period Renaissance elements of the 16th century. The long front panel of maidens dancing in a garden with foliage and flowers, typical of the period. The entire front panel opens downward with a turn of the key. Turned and fluted pilasters flank the panel as well as other motifs of gadrooned, stylized coins and fleuron, pinnae, and bandwork. The sides of the trunk feature more bandwork and fretwork in undulating heights. At its corners are large caryatides upholding fruit in stylized acanthus vegetation and resting upon a base of volutes and mascarons. The base or lower pediment has motifs of stylized florets and medallions and the four feet are block. The top board and some other structural boards were replaced in the 19th century.
