Antique Louis XV Style Needlepoint Stool from France
This round French tabouret dates to the 1800's and is covered in a beautiful old needlepoint with a feathered acanthus leaf design. The background color is a pale ecru and the leaves have reds, pinks, and golds with a pale blue gimp around the circumference . The old paint color is a wonderful French grey/green over a base of pale blue. Classic Louis XV floral designs are highlighted with old gilt paint. The legs are gentle s-curves decorated with acanthus and terminating in scrolled feet with an acanthus leaf known as roquillards (all 4 standing on original wheels). The four c-scroll stretchers terminate in the middle with a central acanthus leaf design. This piece is possibly from the estate of famed Luis Mariano of Irun Spain (indicated by writing on underside), who died 1970, Paris France. He was a classical singer who achieved celebrity in 1946 with « La belle de Cadix » an operetta by Francis Lopez.
