The French Alps are well known for treacherous terrain and frigid winters. Furniture from this area was robust, often built with strong hardwoods such as oak. Pieces even developed their own style, with noticeable similarities in furniture from Northern Italy, Western France, Switzerland, Austria and Southern Germany. Our Alpine dining table, which was hand-carved in oak circa 1890, is no exception. The two-and-a-half-inch thick top is supported by two sinuous trestle legs on top of S-scrolled bracket feet. A symmetrically carved stretcher with fretwork and curled protuberances slot into a mortise on each leg. Two large and shaped dowels slot into the top of the stretcher, adding extra stability.

At 88 inches long, our French Alpine dining table has a warm color and the shapely legs and stretcher make this a great table for an informal setting.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor nicks and stains to top. Light age separations and losses to one foot.
