This fascinating French table dates to the early to mid 1600’s. It is constructed from walnut and patinated walnut, and has a swivel top that folds open to about 51 x 42 inches. This type of table is referred to as a “table portefeuille”. A plateau portefeuille (literally translated to “wallet top”), is a type of table where the top can be unfolded when is use, and used a small console table or side table when folded.

In the closed position, when the table is at its smallest, the top is folded onto itself along the width. Once unfolded, the size doubles as the top swivels 90 degrees around a metal bolt that slots into a drilled hole. The bolt was probably originally a wood dowel, but it was replaced by metal at some point after the table’s production. There is a 2 ½ inch space under the tabletop where items could be stored. The frieze is plain and is attached to four block corner pieces, both of which sit on a flared apron.

The straight lines of the top are contrasted by the beautifully turned spindle legs on bun feet. The legs are connected by the curved x-shaped stretcher with a turned toupie finial that calls more attention to the lower portion of the table.

The flexibility in the size of this table leads to great versatility. You can use this table as an end or side table while in the folded position. The walnut wood has retained a deep and rich patina.

CONDITION: Good overall antique condition. Minor losses and fleabites, specifically to the legs and feet. Uneven wear to finish in some areas. Old wood fills in the old separations. Light water markings to top of table when in closed position. Wear commensurate to age and use.
