Code 613-37 Rare 17th Century Fruitwood Torcheres
This is rare and stunning pair of hand carved wooden statues holding cornucopias, which also serve as candlestick holders .They are from Flandres and date to the 1600's. They stand on bases which feature a frontal cartouche of cherubs' heads at the center of the two volutes. I believe these statues to be mythological in origin stemming from the cornucopia motif which had much symbolism. The costumes are also indicitave of period dress; however, it is only our opinion. A brief description of the cornucopia follows:
The cornucopia became the attribute of several Greek and Roman deities, particularly those associated with the harvest, prosperity, or spiritual abundance, such as: personifications of Earth (Gaia or Terra); the child Plutus, god of riches and son of the grain goddess Demeter; the nymph Maia; and Fortuna, the goddess of luck, who had the power to grant prosperity. In Roman Imperial cult, abstract Roman deities who fostered peace (pax Romana) and prosperity were also depicted with a cornucopia, including Abundantia, "Abundance" personified, and Annona, goddess of the grain supply to the city of Rome. Pluto, the classical ruler of the underworld in the mystery religions, was a giver of agricultural, mineral and spiritual wealth, and in art often holds a cornucopia to distinguish him from the gloomier Hades, who holds a drinking horn instead.
The cornucopias on both statues are an extension of a scrolling foliate motif going around their backs and ending in their hands with a floret. One is missing the floret that drapes from the hand. Recent, square metal drip plate has been added to each cornucopia. The sculptor who carved these statues was excellent at depicting anatomy in scale. These beautiful statues from 17th Century will enhance any collection or area they are placed in. . Condition: Good antique condition commensurate with age, old restorations, minor losses, nicks, rubs, age separations, holes for attachments on backs of both, (these statues were attached to another item at one time).
