This antique French curved top trunk has been made from wooden slats, and thin iron plating. It has wooden inner compartments with decorative paper, and leather handles (1 missing). The antique iron plating and hardware is rusted, leaving it with a very interesting patina. We have chosen not to restore this old patina, but should someone want to, it could be done. The decorative motifs are stylized fleur-de-lys, palmettes, and rocaille motifs. There is an old padlock on the front where a lock would have been, but no key remains. Two latches to either side of the center padlock are still in working order. The interior of the trunk has a wooden paper covered tray with handles and two open side compartments that lifts up to reveal the open space below. There is an old fragment of a French newspaper on the bottom which we believe to be from 1923. The curved underside of the trunk top has more decorative paper with period ladies’ images centered on the three panels. There are two covered center panel s with remnants of iron plated closures and a wide covered section at the back for hiding valuables.
This wonderful old French trunk with its wonderful motifs and patina will be a conversation piece as well as a container for storage. Condition: Rusting to iron throughout, loss to plating in areas, rubs, nicks and minor losses to wood H=27 3/8, L=34 1/8, D=21 1/4 including lock and hardware
