Antique Leather Bound and Studded Trunk from France, Dated 1729
This magnificent leather over wood trunk traveling trunk has three different sizes of nailheads comprising an arabesque design on the curved top and front panel . Beautiful open worked, wrap around, brass straps are on the front and sides with a stunning lock that has a crown over another motif and two rings hanging from it. Beneath this is a four sided, full field motif within another scrolling motif. Hand wrought iron handles are on the sides of this trunk. The sides and back of the trunk have a cross hatched design on the leather.
On the curved top in the center scroll, is the capital letter M with 17 and 29 surrounding it. There are also letters of ADLP centered beneath this and above a wonderful linear serpentine motif in nailheads surrounding the arabesque motif. These obviously were customized letters of the original owners.
The interior is lined with a 19th century style chinoiserie paper pattern. Glued to the inside top center is a label from a trunk maker who restored the trunk at one point in its history.
CONDITION: Good condition with small losses to leather commensurate with age. Interior paperwork in very good condition. No key.
