Assembled by a French artisan, this painted buffet has incorporated two pairs of antique shutter doors into the deux corps (two bodies) construction. The shutter doors open on four pintel hinges with uniquely shaped iron mounts. Both doors are rectangular, with the lower body having asymmetrical arched tops. Additionally, the upper body doors are significantly taller, as they open to reveal two full-length shelves, whereas the lower has only one full-length shelf. Both sections have been painted a light blue, which meshes well with the parcel paint blue/gray exterior.
The upper section has a wonderful, layered crown, with six tiers of diminishing molding. A single quarter round molding adorns the top edge of the lower body, while the base is composed of a thick protruding plinth. All four sides have recessed singular panels, enhancing the rectilinear form of the painted buffet deux corps with antique shutter doors. The French menuisier did an exceptional job of meshing the antique shutter doors with the surrounding case piece. This would make a perfect kitchen cupboard piece, but it is versatile enough that it can be used in any room that needs additional storage.
CONDITION: Good condition with intentional distress marks to more recent construction, such as rubs and parcel painting to match the antiquity of the shutter doors. Old repairs to doors with minor rubs and losses, commensurate to age and use. Traces of old wood worm to shutters. Two functioning locks, each with their own key.
