This stunning pair of Italian putti statues were expertly carved sometime during the 1700’s. Measuring at 41 inches high (to the top of the wood), these were likely originally hanging on a wall, possibly flanking a larger central ornamentation (flat backs indicate use on a wall or affixed to a larger element). In the 20th century, they were mounted to a rectangular wooden base and converted into an important pair of lamps (US wired).
These tall putti are standing on one leg with their off leg suspended in midair, holding a long flowing garment that is wrapped around their waists and extends upwards to their shoulders. Their heads are looking down, resting on the shoulder of the outstretched arm that is lifting the fabric over their head. Their other hand is extended to the side, positioned over their raised off leg, as if to help maintain their balance. They are essentially mirror images of each other. They stand on 20th century varnished rectangular bases that were added (with the lamp tubing, sockets, etc).
We have recently applied a nice coat of French wax to the wood, which gives the putti that alluring sheen which emphasizes the subtleties of the master level carving. Use them as large lamps on a console table, or remove them from their bases and affix them to a wall. Another option is to cut the lamp support and display them as standing statues.
Height to top of Statues is 41 inches. Height to top of sockets is 54 inches.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with slight age separations, nicks and general wear. Restoration to one finger, nicked fingertips on the other putto. The lamps have been electrified for use in the United States.
