This circa 1890 painting is signed Mantelet in the lower left corner. He was a late 1800's painter who exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Francais and whose pieces can still be seen today at the the museums in Château-Thierry et de Pontoise.
Genre paintings, in general, were scenes depicting everyday life. This antique French oil painting depicts people enjoying themselves on a path in Italy. On either side of this path, aging Roman buildings with columns, statuary, fountains, and architectural fragments abound. Amidst all of this, people happily pass the day with their children, chatting, reading, walking and even tending their flock of sheep. A musician peacefully plays an instrument in the left forefront. This beautifully painted scene will bring much pleasure to anyone viewing it.
