Unusual Antique French Fireback from the 1700's
This unusual, antique French fireback has floral and foliate motifs throughout. At the top is a floral crown over a cartouche featuring a rampant lion with crown inside a floral wreath. A straight bar is running horizontally over the center of the lion and a mascaron is at the base. S-Scrolls are at the top, sides and base. The angel supporters on either side have floral headdresses with skirts of flowing leaves. The entire piece is framed with different floral and foliate motifs. This is a beautiful antique fireback.
Firebacks were first used about 450-500 years ago, when they learned that the iron would reflect and disperse the heat from the fireplace without letting it all escape via chimney. Today, they are still used for this purpose as well as accessorizing with tile, displayed as a piece of art, inset into a stone wall and many more choices.
CONDITION: Good antique condition; wear to relief at bottom; rusting to iron, missing motifs at bottom, all commensurate with the age being in the 1700’s
